Hey there! As someone who loves working with kids and enjoys volunteering as a teacher’s assistant, I wanted to learn more about how data science intersects with education. I came across a Stanford article that explained the various implications of using data science in a classroom setting.
Firstly, studying trends in classroom behaviors could help both teachers and administrators see prejudice in grading. Everyone has unconscious biases, including teachers, so it’s very important to track discriminatory trends in grading to ensure that all students are graded equally. For instance, an article by Shradha Parashari explained that teachers might look harder for mistakes while grading essays or tests of minority students so that the students’ grades aligned with their expectations and prejudice. An analytical tool would allow schools to clearly see whether or not underrepresented students are being treated fairly, especially in classes like English where grading is typically subjective.
Additionally, I feel that analytical tools could allow teachers to determine which type of learning style (visual, auditory, or kinesthetic) their students prefer. This type of technology would be incredibly useful for elementary school classes since, at that age, students are not aware of their preferred learning style. If a student consistently does well on a certain type of assignment, the trend would indicate which learning style suits their academic ability, benefiting both the student and teacher.
